The Jesus Knot Board – Using Knots to Praise the Lord

Wednesday 27 August 2008

Visiter CHRETIENS EN RESEAU

By Jeremy Reynalds

Bill King combined his faith in Jesus and his knowledge of the scriptures with the knot-tying skills that he obtained during his years as a petty officer in the United States Coast Guard.

The result was the Jesus Knot Board, a unique tribute to the Lord Jesus Christ and His followers.

According to his web site, when Bill originally started making the Jesus Knot Boards, they were only for his family and friends – to remind them who Jesus is, what He did and means to us. Bill said he wanted to make sure the message he was spreading was accurate, so he decided to show the boards to well known ministers who he knew and loved Jesus and understood the Bible.

Writing on his web site, Bill said he sent a board to the Billy Graham, and another to Charles Stanley. Bill said he hoped that they would correct any erroneous information on the board. Instead, they had nothing but praise for his work. The positive response Bill received from Graham and Stanley inspired him to use the boards as his mission for spreading the Word of God.

That was about 12 years ago, and a lot has happened since then. According to Bill’s web site, several hundred knot boards now hang in museums, libraries, churches, missions, businesses, private homes, children’s camps, military bases, ships, shelters, hospitals, restaurants, nursing homes, hotels and veterans organizations in 34 countries.

Now one is also proudly displayed in the South Valley office of Joy Junction – New Mexico’s largest emergency homeless shelter.

Bill sent me one of his beautiful boards a few days ago with a beautiful note which read in part, “My daughter Johanna was a reporter for the (Albuquerque) Journal, and wrote a few stories about you and your mission about 20 years ago. I see by your web site you came a long way ... I hope you believe the board I made for you and your mission is worthy of displaying ... May God bless you and all your flock at Joy Junction.”

On his website, Bill said each part of a board acknowledges that Jesus is Lord and Savior. The plywood board represents the carpenter Jesus. Mark 6:3 The rope represents rope that fishermen used to tie the knots. Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:16-17 The knots represent Christians who are tightly joined together, making up the Body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:15 - 12:27 The name Jesus is our Lord and Savior, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last. Revelation 17:13 - 22:13 The masthead knot represents the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:16 The sea shells represent the apostles, disciples, or any of the saints you wish them to be. Matthew 10:2 The nails represent the nails used to fasten our Savior to the cross of our salvation. Luke 1:47, John 4:42, Acts 4:12 - 2:23 The eye of the fish represents our righteousness when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. 1 Peter 3:12 The cross represents the tree on which our Lord and Savior was hung for our salvation. Acts 5:30 The red stain stands for the precious blood of Christ which has freed us from our sins. 1 Peter 1:19, Revelation 1:5, Hebrews 9:22 The captions beneath each knot explain what each is used for and the spiritual application about Jesus indicates what we feel about our Lord and Savior.

Bill’s commentary on each board is very encouraging, as well as being informative and inspirational. He also personalizes each board, choosing scriptures and sayings that capture the personalities of its recipients.

Bill told me that he doesn’t sell or even take any offerings for his boards and all the rights belong to the recipients.

What a wonderful ministry! Joy Junction is so proud to have friends like Bill.
